VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide belonging to the secretin–glucagon peptide superfamily. It has the molecular formula C₁₄₇H₂₃₇N₄₃O₄₃S, a molecular weight of approximately 3326.8 g/mol, and CAS number 40077-57-4. First characterized from intestinal extracts, the peptide is widely distributed across the central and peripheral nervous systems and has been studied extensively in receptor-binding biochemistry.

VIP carries a C-terminal amide and signals through the class B G-protein-coupled receptors VPAC1 and VPAC2. Its full sequence is His-Ser-Asp-Ala-Val-Phe-Thr-Asp-Asn-Tyr-Thr-Arg-Leu-Arg-Lys-Gln-Met-Ala-Val-Lys-Lys-Tyr-Leu-Asn-Ser-Ile-Leu-Asn-NH₂. The conserved N-terminal histidine and the central helical region are the structural determinants of receptor recognition in in-vitro studies.
