Overview
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide with the molecular formula C 101 H 152 N 28 O 22 S 2 and a molecular weight of 2,174.6 g/mol. It was first described in 2015. What makes MOTS-c unusual among peptides is its origin: rather than being encoded by nuclear DNA (the DNA in the cell nucleus), it is encoded by the mitochondrial genome — the small, separate set of DNA found inside mitochondria, the energy-producing compartments of cells. Its CAS number is 1627580-64-6.
MOTS-c belongs to a class of molecules called mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs), which are short peptides encoded within mitochondrial DNA. Only a handful of MDPs have been identified so far, making this a relatively new category in peptide science. The peptide’s amino acid sequence — MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR — is encoded within the 12S rRNA gene of mitochondrial DNA, a region previously thought not to produce proteins. MOTS-c is supplied as a white to off-white lyophilized powder, soluble in water, and should be stored refrigerated at 36-46 degrees F (2-8 degrees C).
