Overview
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide — a chain of seven amino acids — with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. It was first described in the late 1990s. Structurally, Selank is based on tuftsin, a naturally occurring tetrapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) that is a fragment of the heavy chain of immunoglobulin G (IgG). The design extended tuftsin by adding a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide tail — the same stabilizing extension used in Semax — to slow enzymatic degradation.
The compound has the molecular formula C33H57N11O9, a molecular weight of 751.87 g/mol, and a CAS number of 129954-34-3. It is also known by the designations TP-7 and Selanc. Selank is supplied as a white to off-white lyophilized powder that is readily soluble in water. The Pro-Gly-Pro motif resists cleavage by prolyl endopeptidases, which gives Selank greater stability in solution compared to the parent tuftsin fragment, which is rapidly degraded.
